Stanton- On Wednesday, Delaware Probation and Parole and Delaware State Police arrested a Wilmington man after he was found to be in possession of a handgun during a traffic stop near Newark.

The arrest occurred at approximately 11:24 p.m., as members of the Governor’s Task Force (G.T.F. is a joint task force of Probation and Parole and Delaware State Police), were on patrol in the area of DE Rt. 4 and DE Rt. 7,  near the Stanton area. Task Force Officers observed a black Infinity M35 commit numerous traffic violations. Officers then conducted a routine traffic stop on the vehicle operated by Darrin L. Burns, 39, of Wilmington. During their conversation, G.T.F. officers observed a small plastic bag which appeared to contain marijuana in plain view on the front passenger seat of the car. Burns was asked to exit the vehicle, and a pat down was conducted on Mr. Burns for officer safety. During the pat down approximately $1,400.00 in suspected narcotic sales profits were found in his pant pocket. Officers then began a search of the Infinity; during that search, Burns attempted to escape from the G.T.F. members on foot, and jumped over a barrier on the side of the roadway. However, Burns failed and fell approximately 20 feet to the ground below which caused him to injure himself.

Darrin Burns was given emergency medical treatment at the scene by officers and then transferred by ambulance to the Christiana Hospital where he was admitted with non-life threatening injuries.

The search of the vehicle yielded a C9 Luger handgun hidden in the trunk of the car. Based on this information G.T.F obtained a search warrant for Burns’ residence. That search resulted in the confiscation of  .45 caliber Judge handgun and ammunition, as well as 270 grams of marijuana packaged for sale were located. A computer check revealed that the handgun had been reported as stolen in 2015.

Burns, who is currently serving federal probation for Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, 2 counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana in a Tier 1 Quantity, Possession with the Intent to Deliver Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Resisting Arrest. Bruns is currently being held at Howard R. Young Correctional.
